Environmental Conservation in Kenya
In 2010, Kenya embraced a new constitution, one which demands that our country maintains at least 10% forest cover in order to create sustainability and conservation of the diverse natural resources in our ecosystem, which will help combat and increase resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change. In the year 2017 the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) reported a standing of 7.0% forest which is still far from the recommended 10%.
As a result of this gap 3Es Experience has made it its responsibility to increase the existing forest cover by planting and partnering to plant as many trees as possible, so as to reduce the impacts of climate change, conserve our diverse natural resources, and create sustainable environments. But Environmental conservation is not only a matter of planting trees, it’s also about tackling different forms of pollution and especially pollution by non-biodegradable waste such as plastics, it’s about practice of sustainable agriculture to tackle issues of soil erosion, land degradation and food insecurity, it’s about cleaning of water bodies to ensure all ecosystems are clean for proper biological diversity.
According to UNDP, Kenya is facing many environmental challenges that include deforestation, soil erosion, land degradation, desertification, loss of biodiversity, water scarcity and pollution from industries. Environmental conservation in Kenya requires the combined effort of different stakeholders and intense environmental conservation awareness campaigns for the general public so that people can understand its importance and make it their personal responsibility for the purpose of sustainability.
In order to create sustainable change not only for this generation but future generations to come 3Es Experience have already started different Environmental Conservation Initiatives towards a clean and green sustainable environment. Some of the Initiatives include the Waste Free Park Initiative where for the purpose of environmental conservation and wildlife protection 3Es Experience and partners have been distributing environmentally friendly litter bags to tourists visiting the Nairobi National Park so that visitors do not litter in the park and cause harm to the ecosystem. Another initiative is joining partners for Tree Planting and Clean Up activities within the Nairobi National Park.
